An iconic symbol of belief and devotions, the ex voto motif of the sacred heart is linked to Catholicism and is depicted as the sacred heart of Jesus. I was drawn to carving and casting this motif as I was raised surrounded by it in my Irish catholic household and visiting family; it was always present. I have carefully hand-carved this in ethically sourced cuttlefish bone, and then cast molten metal into the mould to form this one of a kind, hand-carved piece in solid lead-free pewter.
It brandishes marks from the cuttlefish bone, and the oxidising process accentuates these geographical lines of the journey this piece has taken, from carving to casting, and to filing and finishing - all by hand. This piece is absolutely one of a kind, with the cuttlefish bone being destroyed in the making of it - this is the only one I will make that looks precisely as this does.
